GAY FRIENDLY Kim Dare 5 Chapter One “I think I might be the only gay man on the planet who’d actually like to know someone’s name before he starts grabbing my arse.” Halfway along the path, Mitchell Thompson paused and looked over his shoulder. He frowned slightly as he shook his head at himself, sure he must have misheard. “No, I’m not bloody well exaggerating. You have no idea what the men here are like!” Thompson turned around and retraced his steps to a gap between the excess of greenery that separated a secluded little seating area from the paths that flanked it. The leaves parted to reveal a stunning view over the cliff tops to the sea beyond, but Thompson’s attention never actually moved past the young man in the middle of the scene. He had a mobile phone glued to his ear, and he was sitting on the table with his feet on one of the chairs, but otherwise, he presented a pretty picture. “I did not!” His eyes opened very wide. Pale pink lips morphed into an inviting little O. “I came here because he said the hotel was gay friendly. Friendly,” the younger man stressed. “Handshakes are friendly, clapping someone on the shoulder and watching rugby matches with someone is friendly. Trying to grab someone’s cock before you’ve even said hello is not friendly, it’s…it’s…well, it’s a damn sight more than friendly!” Thompson smiled to himself. The younger man sounded so shocked, so innocently appalled by it all. The boy pushed his hand through his hair, disordering the dark brown spikes. “I don’t know, maybe I’m just not as gay as I thought I was…” Thompson’s smile faded a fraction. The younger man sounded so lost, so uncertain about it all. A noise from the path on the other side of the seating area caught the boy’s attention. He rushed out his goodbyes and hung up on whomever had been playing agony aunt for him. Mitchell tore his attention away from the younger man just in time to see a group walk out from the excessive shrubbery. There were half a dozen men, none of them much .
GAY FRIENDLY Kim Dare 6 older than the boy at the table, and all of them more than a little tipsy. If Thompson was any judge, they were harmless. They were just as obviously out of the boy’s league. “Hello, darling!” One of them hopped up onto the table and put his arm around the smaller man’s shoulder. “You’re Harry’s—” “Cousin,” the boy cut in, evidently thoroughly fed up with men assuming that he was Harry’s something else. “I’m his cousin.” He made a subtle attempt to move out of the newcomer’s embrace. It was so subtle, the other man didn’t even appear to notice. “Edward!” One of the other men remembered as he sat down on the seat the boy had been resting his feet on, blocking one of his escape routes. “Ellis.” The correction was accompanied by an embarrassed smile and an attempt to make his exit by edging crabwise along the table. He edged his way directly into a dark haired young man. Ellis gave a shocked little yelp as he realised he was effectively pinned between the group, or maybe because his attempts to back away from one man had put his hand onto the crotch of another. He snatched his hand back. “Sorry, I…” The guy laughed. “No need to be sorry, sweetheart.” He caught his wrist and guided it good naturedly back towards his cock. Ellis’ eyes opened wider than ever. His mouth opened and closed several times, too. No words came out. “That’s enough.” Thompson stepped out from the greenery. Every pair of eyes turned towards him. “Mr. Thompson!” Glancing away from Ellis for a moment, Thompson spotted a familiar face in the back of the group—Gavin Hart. Barkley had apparently let his submissive out to play on his own that night. Thompson nodded to him. His friend’s submissive seemed to have sobered up dramatically when he recognised both him and his tone of voice. “Take your friends inside, Gavin.” The submissive deftly gathered up the group and ushered them towards the hotel. They were all at the cheerfully drunk stage and took his efforts in good humour, with nothing more than a few slightly slurred attempts to invite Ellis to join them. .
GAY FRIENDLY Kim Dare 7 Bringing up the rear of the group, Gavin paused next to Thompson. “No offence intended, sir. None of us was aware you had an interest in him.” He glanced back to Ellis and Thompson knew he was looking for any sign of a collar missed on first inspection. “There’s no harm done. You needn’t worry I’ll be carrying tales to your master.” Thompson nodded his dismissal. Gavin smiled slightly as he turned away and followed his friends into the hotel. Thompson turned his attention back to Ellis. He still sat on the edge of the table, looking more than a little uncertain about the whole world. As Thompson walked across to him, he tracked every movement, big blue eyes becoming a little more wary with every step Thompson took. Sitting down on one of the chairs surrounding the table, Thompson nodded to another of the chairs. No verbal order seemed to be required. The boy silently got off the table and sat in the chair opposite him. The moment his backside hit the seat, he pulled his legs up in front of him and wrapped his arms around them. “Curling into a ball underneath all that spiky hair makes you look like a hedgehog,” Thompson told him. “Sit up properly.” A slight colour stole to the younger man’s cheeks, but he put his feet on the floor and sat up straight without voicing any protest to the gentle reprimand. Thompson looked him over again—submissive as hell, and just as clueless. “How old are you?” “Eighteen.” He nibbled at his bottom lip as he returned Thompson’s inspection of him. “And how exactly did you end up here?” Ellis blinked at him as if he’d suddenly started speaking a different language. “You obviously had no idea what sort of hotel you were visiting,” Thompson said. The younger man seemed to catch up. “My cousin booked a room here. He was broke, so he said if I paid half the petrol money I could…” Ellis shrugged. His hair really was very spiky, and the fringe was long enough to fall into his eyes. Reaching up, Ellis brushed it out of his way. The moment that task was accomplished, his fingers turned their attention to fidgeting with the edge of his shirt. .
GAY FRIENDLY Kim Dare 8 Thompson waited him out, tracing the younger man’s movements, making sure Ellis knew exactly what was distracting him from their conversation. Finally, the boy fell still, even if he only managed to do so by sliding his fingertips under his backside and sitting on them. “Thank you for…” Ellis glanced at the path back to the hotel, where the other men had disappeared. “You were out of your depth.” The typical teenage retort that Thompson expected, that the boy could take care of himself and knew exactly what he was doing, didn’t arrive. Ellis merely nodded. “I’m not really used to…Harry’s the only other gay man I know.” “And he’s your cousin?” Thompson checked. Ellis nodded. You’re a virgin? Thompson didn’t say it out loud. The boy had practically answered the question already. At least the lack of gay men in his life explained how a boy who looked like that could be so unused to dealing with attention from other men. “Is it always like this here?” “Yes.” Ellis nodded. His feet tapped on the floor before he managed to still them. “One of them called you sir,” he observed. “Yes.” Thompson let that sink in for a little while. The boy didn’t seem to be inclined to run away, either from a man who he had to realise was even further out of his league than those who’d just left them, or from a conversation that was obviously out of his comfort zone. Leaning back in his chair, Thompson made himself comfortable and waited to see what Ellis might do next. “You’re into all that…?” Thompson raised an eyebrow at the half question. “Into…leather and stuff?” Ellis finished, with obvious caution. “Yes,” Thompson allowed. “The guy, he was your…boyfriend?” “Gavin? No. An acquaintance.” “He called you sir,” Ellis reminded him. “He knew that you…” .
GAY FRIENDLY Kim Dare 9 “An acquaintance I know from the kind of bars who cater to men who like ‘leather and stuff’,” Thompson specified. “And if you continue your stay here, you’ll find that most men’s interests soon become common knowledge—even among those who haven’t experienced them first-hand.” Ellis blushed. Thompson didn’t laugh. He didn’t tell him that a man who blushed so easily shouldn’t be staying at that particular hotel either. “What, exactly, do you know about ‘leather and stuff’?” he asked instead, not quite able to resist the temptation to investigate the anomaly in their midst. “A bit from the internet,” Ellis offered. Depending on just what sort of sites he’d been visiting, that could mean just about anything. “Gavin’s a submissive,” Thompson put forward as an opening bid. Ellis seemed to know what that meant. He even made his own little attempt to up the ante. “You’re not.” Thompson’s lips twitched slightly. “No,” he agreed. “I’m not.” Ellis seemed to think about that for a while. “The comparable term would be dominant,” Thompson suggested. Dominant, yes. Ellis nodded to himself. Dominant was a good word for him. And intimidating. That was another good word. Except he seemed to be inclined to be intimidating from the other side of the table, which made him a hell of a lot easier to talk to than any of the other men he’d met there. Ellis nibbled at his bottom lip until he realised Thompson was frowning his disapproval of the habit. He released his lip from between his teeth. “Sorry…I—” Ellis cut himself off. “If you have a question, ask it. Half sentences make it sound like you’re incapable of complete thoughts.” “Should I call you sir, too?” Ellis rushed out. “Would you like to?” .
GAY FRIENDLY Kim Dare 10 Ellis tilted his head on the side and studied the other man. He was some years older than him, probably somewhere in his thirties. With blond hair cut short, he was handsome in a serious sort of way. And, in a way Ellis couldn’t define, he looked very much like the kind of man who should be called sir. The idea held a curious appeal. “You wouldn’t think I was hitting on you if I did?” he checked. “I believe I’m capable of resisting the inclination.” Thompson’s lips twitched as if he was tempted to smile. “Sir.” Ellis let the word linger in his mouth. It felt nice there. When he met the other man’s eyes, Thompson looked amused. Ellis felt a blush rush to his cheeks, but for the first time since he arrived at the hotel, he also felt himself start to relax. The constant need to look over his shoulder faded a little. All at once, the only direction in which he wanted to look was straight towards the most fascinating man he had ever laid eyes on. The dominant had an air of confidence that extended several yards around him, as if he owned whichever bit of the world he happened to be walking through, perhaps as if he somehow owned whatever men happened to pass through that bit of the world, too. “What’s your name?” The dominant didn’t rush to answer. Ellis couldn’t really blame him. Even to his own ears, it sounded like a childish little question, framed by the new kid in the playground who wasn’t quite sure exactly how he was supposed to go about making friends when everyone else already knew each other and the world they inhabited so well. “Was I wrong to ask?” Ellis said. “I gave you permission to ask me whatever you want to, remember?” Ellis nodded. “Mitchell Thompson.” “Mr. Thompson,” Ellis remembered, that’s what the submissive had called him. “Yes.” There didn’t seem to be a lot left to say without making even more of a fool of himself. Ellis took refuge in silence. “What do you think of the hotel?” Thompson eventually asked. “It’s very nice.” .
